Senior Powder Metallurgy Process Engineer

Permanent employee, Full-time · Amsterdam

Job Description
• Lead end-to-end optimization of iron powder processing: powder selection/spec, blending, binder/lubricant strategy, compaction (uniaxial/CIP), debinding/dewaxing, and sintering (time/temperature/atmosphere).
• Engineer porosity, tortuosity, and conductivity to meet anode performance and cost targets.
• Design and run structured experiments (DoE), analyze results (SPC/Minitab/Python/Excel), and lock parameters into robust work instructions.
• Qualify and scale processes from lab to pilot/production (yield, Cpk, cycle time), partnering with Manufacturing and Quality.
• Specify and optimize equipment: presses, tooling, furnaces (belt/tube/vacuum), gas-handling and safety systems.
• Implement quality controls and metrology: density/porosity (Archimedes/pycnometry/porosimetry), microstructure (SEM/EDS), phase analysis (XRD), mechanical tests (hardness/compression).
• Collaborate with electrochemistry colleagues on build/measure/learn loops; translate cell feedback into process changes.
• Drive supplier engagement and incoming material specs for iron powders, pore formers, additives, and lubricants.
• Author SOPs, PFMEAs, and control plans; train technicians and operators.
Your profile
• 5+ years industrial powder metallurgy experience (press-and-sinter metals; iron/steel experience strongly preferred).
• Hands-on mastery of compaction, debinding, and sintering under controlled atmospheres (H₂/N₂/inert/vacuum); understanding of furnace design and thermochemical reactions.
• Track record improving yield, uniformity, and throughput using DoE and data-driven methods.
• Experience tuning porosity and microstructure via powder PSD, green density, additives, and thermal profiles.
• Practical knowledge of safety for metal powders (combustible dust, gas handling).
• Clear documentation and cross-functional communication skills.

Bonus Skills:
• Exposure to electrochemical systems: assembling coin/pouch/cell fixtures, basic galvanostatic cycling/EIS, interpreting cell data.
• Scale-up in a regulated environment (ISO 9001/IATF 16949/AS9100).
• CIP/HIP, roll compaction, or powder tape/laminate experience.
• Scripting/data tools (Python/R/Matlab), Minitab, or MES/ERP familiarity.
